I remember as a young child, trying to mow our small front yard with a reel push mower. I remember my dad made it look so easy but as a kid, I couldn’t wait for the day I could get a mower with a motor! Well, guess what, now I want a push reel mower again! And as luck would have it, there are plenty to choose from.

Yes, whether you call them push reel mowers ,push mowers, old fashioned mowers, or just manual mowers, they are making a big comeback. Many people have never seen a push reel mower, maybe on an old episode of Leave It To Beaver, but that’s about it. Consider some of the benefits these push reel mowers provide.

They’re Green. Gas powered lawn mowers are a major contributor to emissions. The engines on most gas mowers are very basic and contribute to pollution. Once a push reel mowers is manufactured, the pollution it produces is gone. Push reel mowers provide clean pollution free mowing. They also put out little noise pollution, just a peaceful whurr. Can you imagine mowing your front lawn at 5:00 am without disturbing your neighbors?

They’re Economical. I never thought mowing my lawn was an expensive task, until gas hit $4 a gallon. I used to be able to fill my gas can with pocket change, now I use my credit card. Push reel mowers run on a renewable resource, you! Push reel mowers are available under $100 and need very little maintenance and always start on the firs pull or, push if you will. As for service, you may need to oil them here and there and sharpen the blades every so often, but you never need to change the oil or replace a broken starter rope. It has also been my experience, that most of my gas mowers have only lasted a year or to before the motor gives out. I know it is partially my fault for not changing oil, plugs an filters or draining the gas in the fall, but who remembers all of that stuff?

They give a free workout. We have spent so many years trying to make things easier for ourselves that we now have it to easy and have to pay to get a good work out. Push reel mowers will give you a nice low impact work out at your own pace.

Your lawn will love it. A good sharp reel mower will leave your lawn in beautiful shape. If you wear your old steel golf spikes, you will can aerate your lawn at the same. Speaking of golf, many golf courses use a form of a reel mower to keep their grass in top shape. You can even get bagger attachments for many of the models although, they tend to cut the grass into fairly small clippings.

While push reel mowers may not be for everyone, many smaller lawns and their owners, not to mention our planet and our economy can benefit.

Choose from a large variety of push reel mowers and reel mowers here and go green today!

You might think that growing bonsai trees is hard work, and yes - it is. But at least history shows us that people have been doing it for many years, so if anything, that proves its popular! It was originally Chinese, and the Japanese perfected the art many centuries ago. Bonsai means “tree in a pot”, and the process involves trimming and pruning so that it remains small.

This means that you have to shape the tree at a young age both below and above ground. The art, of course, is to maintain proportions. The smallest you can get is around two inches in height at full growth, while some can grow up to two feet tall.

Getting started

Choose your species. Always consult the garden centre experts first as they are employed to know a thing or two! Choose a variety with naturally small leaves - Bottlebrush is a good one that I have used many times.

Take a shallow pot and ensure that you have draining holes. This is very important as the bonsai tree likes dry soil. Also, look for glazing on the outside but not on the inside - if it is on the inside, you will find the tree has trouble breathing.

Put the tree first of all into a large pot so that it gains strength, and when it has matured enough, you can put it into the shallow pot.

The soil is especially important for bonsai trees - you need special bonsai soil that can be bought from any good garden centre, and you need to buy feed that includes nitrogen and phosphoric acid for the autumn. If your garden centre cannot supply this, go online and search for it.

You should also consider humidity. Placing the pot in a humid area is sometimes not enough - you could do your own work by placing it in a shallow tray full of water, allowing that water to evaporate. Or just put it in the kitchen! It’s your choice.

In the end, though, the bonsai is your creation - however you choose to decorate it and however you choose to prune it, it is a reflection of the hard work that you have (or have not) put in. While buying bonsai trees can prove expensive, growing your own can prove a rewarding and inexpensive hobby.

With all the worries today about the purity of food, not to mention the current escalating price of food, it’s time we took another look at the art of hobby greenhouses. If you look at information on the Victorian lifestyle, you will find that many people had a home greenhouse.

In Victorian times home greenhouses were used not only to put food on the table, but to satisfy the Victorian’s curiosity for all things natural. It was considered a worth while past time to have a hobby greenhouse in which to grow amazing specimens of tropical plants and rare species of native plants.

There were large “conservatory” greenhouses in the large homes of the rich back then but you don’t necessarily need a large space to grow enough food for you and your family. There are mini and small greenhouses that fit on porches, balconies and decks that will allow you to grow lettuce, tomatoes and some herbs for great salads. A small to medium green house is large enough to produce enough food for a family of four if planned properly.

A neighbor of mine grows an abundant of flowers and vegetables in a very small greenhouse. She does heat it during the winter and provides her family and friends fresh flowers and produce year round. Since she is retired, she has a lot of time to dabble and try different growing techniques with her backyard greenhouse.

The best practical use for a green house is growing your own produce on a year-round basis. Once you have a backyard greenhouse and have done a bit of research to learn what you need to know to start, you are well on your way to providing your family with home grown food in all seasons. The environment needs to be paid attention too as this will be the main reason you will have success or not. You can also decide if you want to grow your plants organically (without pesticides) or not.

For the average family, growing salad vegetables is a good way to start. You can plan on beginning by planting pots of lettuce, radishes, spinach, carrots, tomatoes, bell peppers and spring onions. All of those are easy to grow and can easily be made into a salad or salsa. Once you become more accustomed to growing your own food, you can start plants that take a little more care, and take up more space like squash, cucumbers and egg plant.

After you have tasted the produce that you have grown yourself, you will not only comment on how much better it tastes, but be proud that you are helping to save the planet by not consuming produce that has been picked way to early, sprayed with who knows what, crated, stored and shipped many miles away. Having a backyard greenhouse is a great way of going green and staying green. It just makes since to save the environment, eat better and healthier and do it no matter what season you’re in.

The majority of your houseplants require year round care, but what indoor gardeners don’t consider is that the level of care provided may need to change with the season. Most houseplants actively grow and bloom in the spring and summer months, which tapers off as fall approaches and often ceases altogether as the winter months take hold.

These growing cycles are predicated on a few different variables. The main one is sunlight and the amount of that valuable resource that is available to them. This naturally lessens in the winter as the days become shorter, and the sky itself becomes more overcast in general. The second is simply continuing on the naturally growing cycle they experienced in the wild, which again was also influenced by the weather. Even though the ‘weather’ and temperature in your house is typically uniform and static no matter the season, this genetic disposition in the plant still holds some sway.

Here’s what you can do to take advantage of their natural growing cycles. Firstly a good fertilizer should be applied near the beginning of spring, as the plants are about to enter their growing spurt even in dry desert landscapes. This needs to be cut back in the summer, and then completely discontinue in the winter. If applied haphazardly, this extra feed can burn out a plant, causing root destruction and the plant’s untimely demise.

Watering habits should follow this same trend. In the spring and summer with the weather warmer and dryer, your plants will need more water to get by. Like with fertilizer though, an excess of water can also be harmful to your plants, so you need to cut back during the cooler months when your plants need, and can handle less sustenance.

Water not only helps with growth, but also works to keep the leaves and roots cool during those hot days. It can also be a good idea to lightly mist the leaves of your plants on hot days with a water bottle to further help in that regard.

Overwatering plants is the most common poor habit that indoor gardeners have, and this is magnified in winter, when plants can’t handle and digest as much water as they can in the summer. Always remember that no matter the unchanging conditions in your house, your indoor plant does change throughout the seasons based its own internal clock, and that you need to change with it.

Of course each plant species may require a slightly different approach, and in fact there are some houseplants that may work on a completely opposite routine. These are general rules that work with most houseplants, but be sure to take the time to familiarize yourself with each individual plant you own and discover any particular quirks it may have.

by Spencer Wilkins

The cost of log cabins varies greatly depending on the kinds of logs which have been used and the size of the property. You will find that those cabins that have been built using handcrafted logs will cost much more than those where the logs have been milled.

Therefore, before you actually go ahead and get a cabin built from logs it is crucial that you actually know what the difference is between milled and handcrafted logs. Those that have been milled will have been placed through a sawmill, lathe or planer. This will ensure that they all come out in the same uniform size, shape and have the same profile.

Logs, which are milled to help extract moisture from them, will either be allowed to dry in the air or be placed in a kiln. The time it takes for the exact amounts of moisture to be removed depends on the size of the log and the method of drying used. But by extracting moisture from the wood helps to prevent too much shrinkage occurring once, the cabin has been constructed.

The actual surface of these kinds of logs will be flat on the top and bottom of each one and they may also have been coped. In some cases, a tongue and groove joint will also have been inserted so that actually assembling the cabin together is a lot easier. Plus it helps to make a much more rigid and strong. These logs can be left with a rougher side to offer a more rustic look but can also be sanded smooth.

The most favoured types of woods, which are commonly used to produce milled logs for cabins, are pine, cedar, spruce or fir. The least expensive type of log cabin using the milled process are ones that are made from pine or spruce whilst those from cedar tend to be the most expensive.

As for handcrafted logs, these will have been prepared by being hand peeled using either a drawknife or through the use of water. The actual logs themselves when being prepared are green and will only have been cut and hauled a few days or weeks before. Unlike milled logs these are allowed to air dry only as kiln drying is a very expensive process, as these need to be dried whilst they are still their full lengths after cutting.

As well as pine and spruce being favorite trees for making handcrafted log cabins from other trees that are used are the Douglas fir, Oak, Juniper, Cyprus and Alpine Fir. The last tree mentioned is also known as a True Fir.

How much your log cabins cost not only depends on the way in which the logs have been prepared, but also the size of the property. Plus the amount of time and effort that it takes to actually construct the cabin. As mentioned handcrafted ones are more expensive than milled ones because the work is, more labour intensive and much larger pieces of wood are used.

Weeds are a gardener’s nightmare and can really spoil your enjoyment of you garden. A gardener’s dream is to have a lush, green lawn and neat, colourful borders all free from weeds. It is said that prevention is better than cure, and this is certainly true for weeds. Let weeds take hold in your garden and you will always be fighting them, and it will always be a struggle. Weeding out established weeds can be a backbreaking task, prevention is definitely the key.

Follow the following tips to help prevent weeds invading and taking hold in your garden.

1. Tackle weeds or grass sprouting up between paving slabs immediately – Either use a good weedkiller to kill them or use an old knife to prise them out. Don’t let them spread. Re-point any gaps with cement to stop them growing through again.

2. Membrane – If you are starting with an empty border or flower bed, you could lay down weed membrane, black plastic from a mulch sack (perforated for drainage) or a layer of newspaper or old carpet to prevent weeds taking root or pushing their way through. Polypropylene is best because it is water permeable and you can just cut into it to plant new plants. Cover with mulch, bark chippings, weed-free straw or gravel.

3. Mulch – Bark chippings are light and so have a tendency to blow around the garden, gravel can get on your lawn and wreck your lawnmower, so using mulch is a good idea. Buy mulch from a garden centre or use horse manure or home-made compost. Put a thick layer on top of the soil, or membrane, at least 5-10cm deep. Keep an eye on it, you will need to keep topping it up, especially if cats scratch at it.

4. Vertical barriers – Burying a vertical barrier, such as damp-proof course, plastic or a sheet of metal, can prevent root weeds such as Japanese Knotweed invading your borders. The barrier needs to be buried at least 30cm deep to be effective.

5. Weed regularly – Keeping an eye on your borders and flower beds and removing weeds before they get a real hold is much easier than tackling a 3 metre high Japanese Knotweed!

6. Weed when the soil is wet – It is much easier to pull weeds out of wet soil than hard dry soil.

7. Learn about lawn care – Adjusting your lawnmower blades to cut at the right height, fertilizing the lawn, aerating your lawn etc. will help to keep your lawn healthy and weed free. A dense lawn will be less prone to weeds.

8. Learn about weeds – Knowing the difference between annual weeds, biennial weeds and perennial weeds will help you to identify the most effective way of dealing with weeds.

9. Take care when planting – Check the rootballs and soil of plants you buy from garden centres, you don’t want to introduce weeds into a weed-free border! If you are not sure whether there are any seeds or weeds in the rootball, isolate the plant in a pot for a while before planting.

10. Keep things clean – Keep garden tools and your lawnmower clean so that you do not spread any weed seeds around the garden.

A weed is not a specific type of plant, it is simply an unwanted plant or a plant that is growing where it is not wanted. Once upon a time, this weed was a wanted plant and may have been introduced to the locality for a particular use – to look pretty, to be used in cooking or for culinary purposes. However, the plant has now become undesirable and has been labelled a “weed”.

Due to the fact that they are native plants and are ideally adapted to their local environment, weeds can take over an area of land or a garden very quickly. They are unwanted because they compete with wanted garden plants for nutrients in the soil, water, light and space and can push out more fragile plants. It is important to do regular weeding in your garden, to stop the growth and spread of these undesirables, so that your other plants can grow. You do not need any high tech or expensive equipment to get rid of weeds in your garden - just buy a small garden hand fork and some gardening gloves and use a washing up bowl or bucket to collect weeds in. For bigger, established areas, you may need a proper garden fork.

Be careful when disposing of weeds, you do not want any seeds to spread or fragments to fall on the soil and regrow.

When you are thinking about ridding your garden of weeds, you need to consider what type of plant the weed is, so that you will know when and how to deal with it:-

Annual – An annual weed germinates, matures, produces seeds and dies off in one complete season (year), leaving behind seeds to produce new plants. The seed supply can be vast – Groundsel plants can produce over 30,000 seeds! Seeds of annual weeds can lie dormant in the soil for many years. For example, the seeds of field speedwell can survive in the ground for over thirty years and even groundsel seeds can lie dormant for up to three years. Dormant seeds are “activated” by a change in conditions – turning over of soil, a change in temperature, light reaching them etc.

Annual weeds need dealing with before they have the chance to produce seeds. They are relatively easy to remove and control because their whole life cycle is over within one year.

Examples of annual broad leaved weeds are groundsel, common poppy, field forget-me-not, scarlet pimpernel and cleavers.

Examples of annual grass weeds are wild oat, barren brome and winter wild oat.

Biennial – These weeds take 2 full seasons (years) to grow enough to be able to produce seeds. Typically, during their first year, biennial weeds have a period of growth and of storing nutrients and food reserves. Then, in their second year, biennial weeds flower and produce seeds. After seed production they die off.

You need to remove these weeds in their first year before they can produce seeds. You can either treat them with a herbicide or uproot them by weeding.

Examples of biennial weeds are hogweed, giant hogweed, hemlock, spear thistle and evening primrose.

Perennial – Perennial weeds survive for many seasons because their roots and stems act as storage systems. They flower and produce seeds over many seasons, without dying off. Even if their top parts are removed by grazing animals, by picking or by weeding, they can regrow. You need to practise careful, heavy duty weeding to get rid of these weeds. Their whole root system must be removed and all stems/vines, otherwise they will regrow.

Examples of perennial broad leaved weeds are clover, bramble, nettle, daisy, dandelion, ground ivy, ground elder, mugwort and Japanese Knotweed.

Examples of perennial grass weeds are common bent, creeping bent, perennial rye grass and rough meadow grass.

Carrie Wykeham is a writer and publisher who writes articles for for Japanese Knotweed Solutions Limited, (http://www.jksl.com), who are the premier UK specialists in the total removal of japanese knotweed.
Many annual flowers have a similar appearance to their perennial counterparts: the gerbera daisy is one such example. The Gerbera genus of plants, which boasts as many as 30 wild varieties, are often used for their aesthetic value. Following their discovery in South Africa in 1884, gerbera daisies were produced in England during the late 1800s in a process that continued to enhance their ornamental characteristics.

From this point gerbera daisies only continued to grow in popularity as travelers brought them home. Now the gerbera daisy is commercially valued as one of the most popular of all fresh cut flowers. Today the gerbera daisy is cultivated for commercial sale primarily in Colombia and the Netherlands. There are many different hybrids, which vary widely in characteristics such as size, shape, color and markings.

The gerbera daisies possess huge flowers that are alike in looks to sunflowers. They are obtainable in a colorful of arresting colors from clean white to profound crimson. With their blossoming heads so large and brilliant, the gerbera daisy is usually linked with pleasure and superior joyfulness. By itself, this flower makes an exceptional alternative for several present case proposed to let some light in someone’s day, or rejoice festive events.

The significance we ascribe to gerbera daisies is not very different from that which we accord to other varieties of daisy. All of them have long been considered symbolic of loveliness, chastity and innocence. However, since it has such a big blossom and comes in such cheerful colors, the gerbera is associated with joy and high spirits as well.

Gerbera daisies are a great gift for a long list of happy occasions from birthdays to weddings, or as gifts that are intended to raise someone elses spirits, such as get-well gifts, because of its wide variety of colors, styles, and different meanings. Gerbera daisies are just as easily at home being a part of a large bunch of different cut flowers, or being alone as the only type of flower in a simple bouquet.

Just like a single rose can be given as a gift, so too can a single gerbera daisy, it can also be given along with a gift. So, regardless of how you decide to give it a fresh gerbera daisy sends a message of warmth and happiness that everyone can receive with joy. To send this message one can order flowers online, or through a local flower shop.

There are a number of different factors that you will need to take into consideration when selecting a company to carry out garden landscaping for you in Wilmington, DE. It is vital that before you actually look for a company you first sit down and decide what it is you want doing in your garden and what you would like to achieve once the work is completed. It is only then can you start searching for the best landscaping, Wilmington DE company who will meet your requirements perfectly.

In this article we offer some pointers to help you with making the right decision with regard to which of the many companies in Wilmington who offer landscaping services.

1. One of the best ways of finding a good landscaping company to carry out a garden project for you is to ask family, friends or neighbours. Just getting their feedback is often a great way of deciding whether the company they used is in fact the right one for you and can often more helpful than if you read the companies advert or look at their website.

2. Before you do hire anyone whether it be recommended by someone you know or because you like their website you need to actually determine if they can meet your particular needs. There are a few landscaping companies who will work in specific areas of landscaping such as ponds or rockery and these may be complete unsuitable for the project that you have in mind.

3. In the beginning you should never restrict yourself to using the first company that is recommended or which you come across. To get the best for you and your garden it is an idea to contact several companies and see what kind of customer service they provide. This way you will be able to quickly determine if the company you have selected is right for you and will do what is necessary.

4. Also before you employ the services of a landscaping company no matter where you live make sure that they have all the appropriate licenses as well as insurances. Companies with the right credentials are those who will guarantee to make right any problems and deal with any untoward situations as they arise. One of the most important pieces of documentation any reputable landscaping company is going to have is liability insurance.

Spending time investigating the company before you actually employ them to do the work will not only save you money, but also a lot of heartache as well. What could be worse than employing a company that actually ruin rather than improve your garden for you. So never rush into employing the services of the first company that you run across.

Although you may think finding the right landscaping, Wilmington DE company is going to prove difficult then think again. If you keep the above pointers in mind then you will be able to find the services of a company that are able to meet your needs perfectly.

Garden Designs can take a long time to do. Remember that there are many design principles that need to be taken into account when landscaping your garden. A common problem occurs in that people visit a nursery and see something they like. Impulsive purchases for their garden might not match the theme and style of their home. The resulting garden may very well be less than can be expected when using a proper design.

The trick is to plan your garden properly before you go to the nursery. Having a good idea about the size and layout of your garden and what you would like it to become, will help you buy the right things at the right time. However, if you have a professional garden design, all the guesswork will be taken out of purchasing items for your garden. You will not have to think about where to put things, whether they will fit into the space, or into the style and flow of your garden.

It is best to time your garden design well in advance of spring. This provides you with enough time to finalize the design and to accomplish any hard landscaping.

Most nurseries and garden suppliers realise that people generally tend to spend less time and effort on their garden during autumn and winter months. As a result of this, they provide many special offers and price cuts on their stock. This is very good news for someone who has taken the time and the opportunity to time their garden landscaping.

Having a prepared garden plan has many great advantages. A good design will have a complete key and plant list, which will aid in purchasing the correct items and quantities. During the autumn and winter months, return to the nursery regularly with this list. If you are designing your own garden, you should also try to create a complete key and plant list. Different plants and other garden items will be sold as special offers at different times. The impulsive buyer, who tries to do everything at once, often misses out on wonderful deals, or buy something that they don’t really need.

Any good design would have some form of hard landscaping. Hard landscaping includes items such as walls, pathways, gazebos, greenhouses, water features and fountains. They are essential elements of your garden. Installation of hard landscaping could be the most labour intensive activity involved in landscaping your garden. In many cases hard landscaping also has a negative effect on existing plant life surrounding the item during installation. Pretty plants can easily be damaged during installation.

Some hard landscaping items can take a considerable amount of time to install, especially so if you are doing it yourself. Don’t waste the precious spring and summer months installing things that can be done during fall and winter.
