What kind of outdoor plant lives well in a terra cotta pot?

I have a slim, terra cotta pot that’s about three feet tall, and it’s a decoration outside in the garden. I was told that such pots heat up to high temperatures in the sun and drastically cool down at night. What kind of outdoor plant lives well in that environment? I was thinking of something vertical like a palm tree, since its surrounded by bushes; or something colorful, if that more pleasantly attracts the eye.

If it is getting direct sunlight then I would recommend putting something in there that is ok with lotsa sun. You did not indicate how wide it is… however a palm sounds good. If you want a splash of color or something floral, then try the lantana. Doesn’t need a lot of water and blooms. Spreads out well too.

Marijuana would grow really well in 3 feet of soil. the pot actually warms up and stays warm for a while… it doesnt get cold right away.

dwarf bananas, dwarf azaleas, just about any outdoor plant can be grown in a terra cotta pot, just remember to water well and often, they dry out quicker than planting in plastic or foam…

A Palm would not be a choice. For color and year around evergreen, try a flowering Sedum. Hardy Geranium, or Dianthus would also be colorful. This group of plants will take moisture extremes, and not be stressed by it, as much as most plants.
Terra cotta drys quickly. It will chip, crack, or break easily. It is heavy to handle, when filled with moist soil.

  11. I am certainly no expert but maybe try verbena – I know mine handle the heat very well (in direct sun all day) and I just water every day. The flowers are really pretty too and it will return every year

  12. Look around… everything is about location, choose a plant that does well in your area, I know, a common plant is not very striking, but you will spend less time and money taking care of it, local ornamental grasses are a very good option. Terracotta pots are very porous so they dry out quicker meaning that you have to water often. The problem with tall plants like palm trees is that wind can tip the pot over.
